Sundaram

Sundaram is a creative arts practice center for the disabled which was established in Dhaka in 2019. At present, eight Sundarams have been established in 8 divisions in the country – Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barisal, Khulna and Mymensingh. People with physical, visual and speech-hearing disabilities are constantly engaged in creative work through various trainings.

‘Sundaram’ was born as part of the continuation of the theater practice for the disabled in 2013, a joint initiative of Dhaka Theater and the British Council. The main objective of Sundaram is to integrate the disabled population of the country into mainstream cultural and social activities. In this way, the common misconceptions and thoughts about the disabled in the society will be removed. The main goal of Sundaram is to facilitate the development of creativity by training disabled artists in various fields according to their intellectual and physical abilities.

State and social structures are still not disability friendly. To make the larger population of the country aware and empathetic about the disabled and to develop disability-friendly facilities across the country. And in the process creating an inclusive society where people thrive as human beings, regardless of their handicaps.

The Words of The Director

The canvas of Pitrgana novel by Zakir Talukdar, one of the fiction writers of contemporary Bengali literature, is very broad – the narrative of Subhritah, the collection of numerous characters. It is very difficult to convey this well-written narrative in Natyam in just 1 hour with 25 actors. In addition, most of these young actors have special physical needs. However, overcoming these various barriers, we are trying to say that no physical barrier can stop the large and diverse open spaces of theater. All the people of the world are capable of spreading great potential and brilliance in various fields. In making the play, my revolutionary dramatist owes a lot to Bertolt Brecht, Meyerhold and modern Bengali narrative drama. But characterization is given priority considering the overall context of the actors. Keeping in mind the various limitations mentioned above in this production, it is my submission that any failure in the dramatization of a much-discussed and rich contemporary novel is not my Ñ novel as a guide. Novels and dramas as distinct art mediums are endowed with different beauty. However, the theater that can accompany any art and philosophy can spread free wings to infinity – this thirst is my daily path.

Drama

Pittrigon

In the twilight of the eleventh century, amidst the reign of the Pala dynasty, a tempest brewed in the hearts of the Kaivarta peasants of Varendra. Enraged by the oppression under the Buddhist Pala king and his vassals, they rose, led by the valiant Dibyak. Their uprising claimed the life of Palaraja Mahipala, birthing a sovereign realm within Varendra's embrace. A rare instance where peasants governed themselves, a saga echoed through time. For decades, Varendra thrived under Rudok and Bhima's stewardship. Yet, Ramapala, the Pala heir, couldn't bear their defiance. Eighteen allies bolstered his bid to reclaim Varendra, culminating in treachery under moonlit skies, rewriting history's tale penned by biassed hands. The gallant Kaivarta, betrayed yet unbowed, found their saga silenced, their valour shrouded by the ink of victors. Pitrigana stands testament, an ode to the untold saga of Varendra's indomitable spirit.
