Sundaram

Sundaram is a creative arts practice center for the disabled which was established in Dhaka in 2019. At present, eight Sundarams have been established in 8 divisions in the country – Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barisal, Khulna and Mymensingh. People with physical, visual and speech-hearing disabilities are constantly engaged in creative work through various trainings.

‘Sundaram’ was born as part of the continuation of the theater practice for the disabled in 2013, a joint initiative of Dhaka Theater and the British Council. The main objective of Sundaram is to integrate the disabled population of the country into mainstream cultural and social activities. In this way, the common misconceptions and thoughts about the disabled in the society will be removed. The main goal of Sundaram is to facilitate the development of creativity by training disabled artists in various fields according to their intellectual and physical abilities.

State and social structures are still not disability friendly. To make the larger population of the country aware and empathetic about the disabled and to develop disability-friendly facilities across the country. And in the process creating an inclusive society where people thrive as human beings, regardless of their handicaps.

The words of the director

What is beauty, what is the definition of looking for beauty, we are trapped in the society that has created us, which has led us to commercialization over time. We have forgotten people, who is the mind of people, in the world of 7 billion people, who determines the standard of beauty?, what is beautiful to me may not be beautiful to others, then how do we tie beauty to a standard, if it looks like this, beautiful is beautiful if it is tall. If it is beautiful, then it is beautiful, so those who do not fall into the category of man-made beauty, are they not beautiful, this is that we are 16 percent of the world, about 1.3 billion people, society, country, state, with a blind eye to the definition of beauty. We are doing this play from the idea of finding a break in that thought.

Drama

Kendro Borabor Surangotir Naam Prithibi

We live in a haunted world. I am losing strong confidence and trust in my own sense of self. A broken state of mind has dwarfed us. In no case is it allowed to grow. Like a numb doll of time. I am wandering around like a zombie. Selfishness, baseness is constantly flowing in the veins–but why? Because we do not know ourselves? But are we forgetting ourselves in the whirlwind of a surreality? Every aspect of society is covered with a terrible black shadow. Belittling each other with false egos, creating fake situations. It is measured by means of external perception. As a result, we are going to lose our ethnic friendly flexibility. We are all falling behind. Not just people with special needs, not brains, rotten at the very core. In this situation, some scenarios have been enacted. Yet there are some signs of getting to the bottom of the knot. That initial cry is the scene here. Where the dancing and dancing of our empty ritual is displayed.
